A better winter entryway

Start with the door swing, not the shoe rack. A winter entryway works when people can come in, take off wet footwear and reach their everyday things without moving a pile first.

Map the space you actually use

Open the door fully and mark its sweep with removable paper on the floor. Measure the remaining rectangle beside it, including the baseboard. Then place your largest pair of winter boots inside that area. Their footprint is more useful than a product photo showing neat little shoes. Keep the route through the room clear; an attractive bench is a poor purchase if it makes arrival awkward.

Choose between a tray, rack and bench

A tray gives wet footwear a defined place and can be lifted for cleaning. An open rack adds levels but needs enough height for boot shafts and a way to manage drips. A bench adds a place to sit, but its legs can leave less usable tray space than its outside width suggests. For a very narrow entrance, begin with a tray and an existing chair nearby rather than buying a complete furniture set.

A useful size reference

IKEA Canada lists the BAGGMUCK tray at 71 × 35 cm. This is a measuring reference, not an Amazon product recommendation: cut paper to that size and try it in your entrance. If it blocks the door, look for a smaller tray. If the boots spill over it, consider two separate trays that can be placed where the room allows.

Make the setup easy to maintain

Separate wet footwear from dry shoes and avoid letting water collect unnoticed under a tray. Put only the current season's everyday footwear by the door. A small existing basket can collect hats and gloves; give wet items space to dry before storage. Compare the tray's inside dimensions, raised edges and cleaning instructions before ordering. Skip decorative extras until this simple arrangement has worked for a week.

Before you order
