The buy-once measuring checklist
A product can match the space on paper and still be awkward to use. Measure the journey into the space and the room it needs while in use, then compare the exact model.

Start with the usable rectangle
Record width, depth and height at the narrowest points. Baseboards, pipes, hinges and shelf supports all reduce usable room. Take a second measurement to catch mistakes and write down whether your numbers are centimetres or inches. One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres; round conversions cautiously rather than rounding a tight fit into apparent clearance.
Check how the item enters
A box must pass through the cupboard opening before it can sit inside it. A rack may need to be assembled in place. Check whether the item is delivered assembled and whether the installation instructions require room for tools. If it must be tilted, a simple width-depth-height comparison will not prove that the path works.
Measure the working space
Allow room for doors to swing, drawers to extend, handles to be gripped and contents to be lifted out. A folded drying rack needs far less room than one in use. Write down both states and use paper to mark the larger footprint. Think about other people who use the space and the everyday route through the room.
Compare what the listing really says
Distinguish package dimensions from product dimensions and internal capacity from outside size. If a key measurement is missing or conflicting, ask the seller or manufacturer before buying. Confirm the particular size and variant selected. Choose a margin deliberately
There is no universal clearance that guarantees a fit. A rigid box, fabric bag and rolling cart need different allowances. Use the planner as an initial screen, then check the product instructions and your paper layout. When space is very tight, favor an option you can verify in person or a retailer whose current return terms you understand.
