Expandable does not mean universal. A drawer organizer must fit at its smallest size, slide through the opening, and leave room above the tallest utensil when the drawer closes.

Measure inside the drawer
Use the internal bottom width and depth, not the cabinet front. Look for sloping sides and screws that reduce clearance. Check the opening height as well as the drawer's side-wall height: utensils can catch on the cabinet even when the organizer itself fits. Empty the drawer first so an overlooked object does not distort the measurement.
Understand the expansion direction
Read the manufacturer's dimension labels and diagrams. Some organizers expand sideways; others divide only their internal compartments. OXO lists one large expandable utensil organizer at 16.75 × 15.5 × 2.5 inches unexpanded. That example is already too large for many narrow drawers. Do not confuse it with smaller products sold under similar names.
Build a paper layout
Draw the organizer's closed footprint and place your actual utensils over it. Long serving tools, thick handles and an unusually broad spatula may need their own space. Organising everyday cutlery separately from occasional tools can make both drawers simpler. A set of individual small trays may fit an awkward drawer better than a one-piece expanding unit.
Avoid buying capacity you cannot use
More compartments are useful only if the items fit them. Decide which objects deserve the most accessible positions and remove duplicates before sizing storage. Check the cleaning instructions and whether dividers can be removed. After arranging the drawer, close it slowly and watch for contact above the contents. Stop if something catches; forcing it can damage utensils or the drawer.
